One of the questions I get quite often is how to choose a location for an engagement session! Because I believe engagement sessions are meant to celebrate the unique season you are in as a couple, I always recommend looking back on your relationship and considering which places held incredible memories for the two of you. Engagement sessions are meant to be fun and celebratory – so picking a location you are excited about is so important! That’s why we’ve listed a couple of ways to determine the perfect location for the two of you to celebrate your engagement!
1. Choose a location that holds meaning to your story.
The first thing I recommend to most couples is to look back on your relationship and consider which places meant the most to you. This could be where you went on your first date, where you went to school, where he proposed – the list goes on and on! My husband and I decided to return to the place where he proposed in Georgetown for our engagement session, and now that spot holds even more meaning to us! Choosing a location for this reason will also inevitably make you more giddy and comfortable during your session.

2. Consider which activities make you feel alive.
Whether its hiking to the peak of a mountain or strolling the streets of your favorite city, think about what makes the two of you feel alive! I’ve had couples bring a picnic to their favorite water front spot simply because that was where they felt the most connected – and it came through in their photos! This was where he had asked her to be his girlfriend almost half a decade prior, and where they would always return while they were dating.

3. What is your dream date night?
It can be super fun to use your engagement session as a reason to have an incredible date night, that just so happens to be captured on camera! If there is a place the two of you have always wanted to go to, this could be the perfect time to go! Drew and Anna were so excited to explore Charleston, and although they didn’t have previous memories there, they loved trying something new for their session!

4. Consider a theme you’d like to go for.
Do the two of you love classic elegance? You may want to stroll the streets of a historic city. Do you love simplicity and enjoying each other company? Maybe meet at your favorite coffee shop and then explore the surrounding streets. Do you crave to breathe in fresh air? Maybe consider a location with mountain views or a waterfront. Here are a couple more ideas!

5. Choose your favorite season!
Do you love the fresh blooms in the spring, the summer sun, the crisp fall air, or white blankets of snow in the winter? Sometimes choosing a season that means a great deal to you can help create the perfect backdrop for photos!
